eCall is the automatic emergency calling system, which will be mandatory for all new cars - as agreed between the EU commission and the European automotive industry.
In an emergency, such as an accident, a call is initiated through the airbag, a crash-sensor or manually. The eCall sends via GSM or SMS the current positions as well as other relevant data to an emergency center. The emergency center is able to call back and locate the accident using the GPS data immediately. Thus, emergency services, police, etc. are able to response much quicker.
